Sungai Bakap is a
township in Penang state, Malaysia. It
is situated in Seberang Prai Selatan. It is located immediately to the
south of Valdor.
Sungai Bakap is part of a vast sugar plantation that has now been largely
replaced with palm oil. It is still a rural community at the edge of urban
development. Like Valdor, it was developed by sugar pioneer Khaw Loh Hup
and his son-in-law, Kee Lai Huat, who became a 19th sugar baron.
The grand Chinese-style courtyard mansion of Kee Lai Huat, known as Kee
Poh Huat Kongsi, is still standing in the village of Sungai Bakap.
Getting there Exit the North-South Expressway at either Exit 156 (Jawi
Interchange) and drive north along Federal Route 1 to reach Sungai Bakap.
Sungai Bakap has one general hospital known as Hospital Sungai Bakap (a
district hospital). One of the well known pharmacists in this hospital is
Tan Keat Hin. His group was involved in the Northern Region Innovation
Convention Competition (In Malay: Pertandingan Konvensyen Inovasi Zon
Utara) for the year 2011 and he represented his group for the Quality
Assurance Poster Presentation in this convention. He has led his group to
