Kuala Besut

Kuala Besut is a small fishing town in Besut District on the coast of Terengganu in Malaysia, situated in between Kota Bharu in Kelantan and Kuala Terengganu in Terengganu. Kuala Besut is about 50 km south of Kota Bharu and about 110 km north of Kuala Terengganu.

Kuala Besut is the official of Perhentian Island boat terminal by the government of Malaysia to provide transportation for local and foreign tourists. It is the departure point for boats to the Perhentian Island. There are a variety of tour operators that tourist can choose for getting to Perhentian Island.

Situated as jumping off point to Perhentian Island,  Kuala Besut has few hotels and motels for tourists who miss the boat or would like to stay overnight there before start the next destination. A few coffee shops, sundry shops, one pharmacy shop and one clinic.

There are only 2 buses services going direct to Kuala Besut from Kuala Lumpur, namely Mutiara and Mahligai. The cost is usually RM40.00, and they drop you off within walking distance of the jetty. The buses leave twice daily, 9.00 AM and 9.00 PM and arrive in Kuala Besut around 5.00 AM. The first boat is at 8.00 AM (until then is pier gate closed!). Mutiara and Mahligai buses usually stop near the jetty. The trip is about 9 hours with only one stop at around 1.00 AM/PM.

Taxi drivers may try to take you to a travel agent of their choosing, who will pay them commission (which gets charged to you). If you are going to the Perhentian Island and already have accommodation booked, just go directly to the jetty, or pick an agent of your own choice, but in the end you will pay RM70 for return ticket everywhere so it really doesn't matter which travel agency you will choose.

Tour operators in town can arrange transfers to Taman Negara National Park (RM90), Cameron Highlands (RM75) & Kuala Lumpur (RM70). If you are returning from the Perhentian Island you'll need to catch an early boat to make it in time, so advance reservations are recommended.

The nearest railway station is Tanah Merah, although most travellers opt for Kota Bharu's better-serviced Wakaf Bahru station instead. The nearest airport is Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) at Kota Bharu.

Kuala Besut always welcome any foreigner or local tourist to stay for short and long term holidays. A calm day where peaceful feelings is awaiting for you here.
