Kuala Besut is a small
fishing town in Besut District on the coast of
Terengganu in Malaysia,
situated in between Kota Bharu in
Kelantan and
Kuala Terengganu in
Terengganu. Kuala Besut is about 50 km south of
Kota Bharu and about 110 km north
of Kuala Terengganu.
Kuala Besut is the official of
Perhentian Island boat terminal by the
government of Malaysia to provide transportation for local and foreign
tourists. It is the departure point for boats to the
Perhentian Island.
There are a variety of tour operators that tourist can choose for getting
to Perhentian Island.
Situated as jumping off point to
Perhentian Island, Kuala Besut has few
hotels and motels for tourists who miss the boat or would like to stay
overnight there before start the next destination. A few coffee shops,
sundry shops, one pharmacy shop and one clinic.
There are
only 2 buses services going direct to Kuala Besut from
Kuala Lumpur, namely Mutiara and
Mahligai. The cost is usually RM40.00, and they drop you off within
walking distance of the jetty. The buses leave twice daily, 9.00 AM and 9.00
PM
and arrive in Kuala Besut around 5.00 AM. The first boat is at 8.00 AM (until then
is pier gate closed!). Mutiara and Mahligai buses usually stop near the
jetty. The trip is about 9 hours with only one stop at around 1.00 AM/PM.
Taxi
drivers may try to take you to a travel agent of their choosing, who will
pay them commission (which gets charged to you). If you are going to the
Perhentian Island and
already have accommodation booked, just go directly to the jetty, or pick
an agent of your own choice, but in the end you will pay RM70 for return ticket
everywhere so it really doesn't matter which travel agency you will
choose.
Tour operators in town can arrange transfers to Taman Negara National Park
(RM90), Cameron Highlands (RM75) &
Kuala
Lumpur (RM70). If you are returning from the
Perhentian Island you'll need to
catch an early boat to make it in time, so advance reservations are
recommended.
The nearest
railway station is Tanah Merah, although most travellers opt for
Kota Bharu's better-serviced
Wakaf Bahru station instead. The nearest airport is
Sultan
Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) at Kota Bharu.
