Sungai
Siput is a town and also a parliamentary constituency in Kuala Kangsar
district, Perak, Malaysia. Sungai
Siput located about 20 km from Ipoh and 14 km from
Chemor, both from the South and 24 km from the established
Kuala Kangsar town from the West. The town
is surrounded by many small villages.
The main
economic activities are agriculture-based, such as palm oil and rubber
plantations. Before the
construction of North-South Expressway (PLUS), all traffic going to
destinations in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia, such as
Kedah,
Perlis and
Penang would pass through the
town of Sungai Siput. With the PLUS bypassing smaller towns, fewer people,
traffic, and tourists pass through Sungai Siput.
Mahatma Gandhi Kalasalai Tamil School is the biggest Tamil school in the
state with over 1000 students. The school was built by Tun V. T.
Sambanthan in 1954 and was officially opened by Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit,
former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's sister.
SMJK Shing Chung is the largest secondary school in Sungai Siput.
Sungai Siput is famous for its groundnuts and can easily be bought in one
of the shop along the main street.
