Standard working hours (or
office hours) refers to the legislation to limit the working hours per
day, per week, per month or per year. If an employee needs to work
overtime, the employer will need to pay overtime payments to employees
as required in the Malaysian Labor Law.
Normal office hours in
Malaysia are 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM from Mondays to Fridays, with some
selected businesses and government agencies also open until noon on
Saturdays and Sundays.
Lunch break for Mondays to
Thursday for most of offices in Malaysia are from 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm.
Fridays observed longer lunch break (12.15 pm to 2.45 pm) to cater the
Muslim Friday prayers.
The Malaysian Labour Law
prescribes a minimum of 10 days of paid holidays in a year. This is
not that much, however, there is barely another country which has as
many religious holidays as Malaysia. Due to the different cultures and
religions in Malaysia, and the freedom to live these out, there are
Muslim as well as Buddhist, Hindu and Christian gazette public
holidays.
